Rakeback FAQ

What is Rake?

Rake is how both brick and mortar and online poker rooms make a profit.  Instead of playing “against the house” like in other casino games, poker players are competing against one another to win pots.  Poker rooms "rake" a small portion from the pot before the chips are pushed to the player who won the hand.  At most online poker rooms, the rake is normally maxed out at three dollars per pot, but this adds up over time, taking a significant amount from your potential profit in the long run.

How Can I Get a Portion, or Even All, of the Rake I Pay Refunded Back to Me?

You can get a significant portion of the rake you pay refunded back to you by signing up for a room through any of the rakeback affiliates listed on RakeBreakers.  These rakeback providers are affiliates for the poker rooms, and are paid for attracting new customers.

New customers who sign up for an online poker room through a rakeback-providing affiliate are linked to that affiliate for the entire duration of their play at that room.  As a result, the affiliate receives residual income from the poker room, normally a percentage of the customer’s rake paid (called MGR, or “Monthly Gross Revenue”) on a monthly basis.  In turn, a rakeback-providing affiliate transfers a significant percentage of their own income back to the customer as "rakeback", in order to encourage customer loyalty and increased play.  Some poker rooms, such as Absolute Poker, pay rakeback directly into the players' accounts and pay the affiliates separately, but normally you will be paid by your rakeback-providing affiliate.

Instead of, and sometimes in addition to, rakeback, some affiliates offer gifts and other incentives in return for your poker play, such as poker chip sets, poker-related software and entry into monthly freeroll tournaments.  Oftentimes, these affiliates offer these rewards in order to encourage more play at a particular room, but sometimes this is the only available alternative for a poker room that is strictly against rakeback deals.

You can get all (and sometimes 120%+) of the rake you pay refunded back to you by signing up as a poker prop through any of the prop managers listed on RakeBreakers.  For the most part, props play on smaller, newly-established sites and are there to both start new games and prevent current games from breaking up.  As a poker prop, you are considered a host for the poker room, and are required to be polite and friendly at all times.  Props are often playing head-up and short-handed, and may be required to change tables on an as-needed basis.  The competition is usually considerably tougher, but propping has the potential of greatly improving one’s overall game, in addition to virtually playing for free!

What About Tournaments and Sit n’ Gos?  Instead of Raked Pots, I’m Paying a Buy-In Fee… Can I Get a Portion of these Fees Refunded to Me?

It depends on the room.  Feel free to contact any of the rakeback-providing affiliates listed on RakeBreakers to see what they have to offer.

I Already Created an Account at a Poker Room Before I Knew I Could Get Rakeback There… Can I Create a New Account Under a Rakeback-Providing Affiliate?

It depends.  Normally this is not allowed, but that doesn’t make it impossible to create a new account at some poker rooms.  You might have to jump through some hoops, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done.  Feel free to contact one of the rakeback-providing affiliates listed on RakeBreakers to see what your options are.

The Poker Room that I Want to Receive Rakeback From isn’t Listed by Any of the Affiliates on RakeBreakers… Am I Out of Luck?

Maybe, maybe not.  Feel free to make a post about your preferred poker room in the “Request Offers” section of our Forum.  If a rakeback-providing affiliate listed here can provide rakeback for that room, you will likely receive a private message from them stating their terms.  It is important to realize that some poker rooms are strictly against rakeback deals, and are actively trying to stamp out affiliates who go against their terms and conditions.  An affiliate might have the best of intentions, but there is still a risk that your affiliate may get shut down sometime in the future for reasons beyond their control.  How the affiliate handles these situations will vary, but most likely you will have to look elsewhere for rakeback should this occur.

One thing to note is that both PokerStars and Paradise Poker affiliates cannot provide rakeback for various reasons, but it simply cannot be done in any way, shape or form, so don’t bother asking.

If I Sign Up for a Poker Room through a Rakeback-Providing Affiliate, What is My Profit Potential?

It depends on how many hands you play on a monthly basis and what limits you play at, but your profit potential can be quite significant.  Many of the rakeback-providing affiliates listed on RakeBreakers offer rakeback calculators on their websites, but keep in mind that these calculators are rough estimates only, since the end result depends on your playing style, your opponents’ playing styles, and where you’re playing; however, they are a fun tool for speculative purposes.

How and When Will I Be Paid?

This varies by affiliate, but many rakeback-providing affiliates offer a wide selection of payment options (Neteller, player-to-player transfers etc.).  Sometimes, the poker room itself will deposit your rakeback directly into your player account, but this depends on the room’s payment policies. Also, while most rakeback-providing affiliates pay on a monthly basis, some are able to pay more often, even on a daily basis.

Please keep in mind that in most cases the affiliates must wait for payment from the poker room before they can pay you.  This is usually not immediately at the end of the month, and can sometimes take a couple weeks or more.  Usually there is no need to panic… If your affiliate communicates well, they will keep you informed as to when to expect your rakeback payment.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us, make a post in our Forum, or contact one of the rakeback-providing affiliates listed here.
